In 1978, Terry Riley and Kronos Quartet met while both were on the faculty at Mills College in Oakland. So began a personal and musical friendship that continues to this day and has yielded 27 works for string quartet, including four critically acclaimed albums, a NASA commission and a Grammy nominated composition. At the Hop, Kronos and Riley perform works drawn from that far-reaching catalog, joined by Riley's son, guitarist Gyan Riley ("a one-man American-music machine, amicably ranging across the fields of jazz, world music, and post-minimalism"—The New Yorker). Help us celebrate a vibrant 40-plus-year collaboration and Riley's 85th birthday. For more than 40 years, Kronos has combined a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience. In the process, Kronos has become one of the world's most celebrated and influential ensembles, performing thousands of concerts, releasing more than 50 recordings, commissioning over 850 works and arrangements from many of the world's most eclectic composers and performers. Riley is one of the quartet's favorites. The influence of Riley's hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated Eastern-flavored improvisations and compositions can be heard across the span of contemporary and popular music.
