About Us

Chartered in 1761, Enfield is located in the heart of the Upper Valley. Early on in our history Enfield developed into an agricultural community. The settlement of a Shaker community on Mascoma Lake ushered in a new era for Enfield. As the Shakers expanded their settlement they encouraged the railroad to pass through our community.

Like many New England areas, we too benefited from our fast moving waters, in this case the Mascoma River, to assist in the expansion of local industry. Enfield enjoyed a vibrant mill industry for many decades, finally coming to a close in the 1970's. We are now a thriving 21st century community offering a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities for our residents and visitors.

Our residents (permanent resident population is approximately 4,600) and visitors can enjoy any number of outdoor year round all-season recreational opportunities. We have over 3,000 acres of conserved land and over 15 miles of shore land waiting to be explored. Enfield also has vibrant arts community, including a professional theater, summer musical camps and several museums.
